FireFighter of the Year

The press release below was issued this week by Chief Roberts.
For Immediate Release: Millburn Fire Department
Contact: Michael Roberts, Chief 973-564-7040
The Saint Rose Council of the Knights of Columbus #6386 recently recognized Millburn Firefighter Russell M. Lynn for outstanding community service. “It was an easy choice” according to Fire Chief Michael Roberts who made the recommendation to the council. “Russ has a number of letters in his personnel file from people both in and outside the Millburn/Short Hills community that he has done random acts of kindness for. Roberts recalls In one instance, while off duty in a bad snow storm Russ came upon a group of men in tuxedo’s stranded at the Millburn Train Station who couldn’t get a taxi because of the weather. It was 11:00 in the morning and they had to be at a family wedding at the Crystal Plaza in Livingston by 12:00 as one of the individuals’ was going to sing for the bride. F/F Lynn loaded them into his personal van and through the storm got them there safely before noon and of course would take no money for the gesture. “I also remember getting a call from a doctor and former resident of Millburn who had dropped her wallet in the street in downtown Millburn. Russ picked up the wallet and spent two days tracking down the owner and returned the wallet with the $2,100.00 cash still inside Roberts said. “That is just who he is I told the doctor”. Russ has over thirty years of service as a firefighter with the Millburn Fire Department and has been cited for acts of bravery for rescues that he and his crew have made over the years. With the Certificate of Achievement given to him by the Knights of Columbus comes a $100.00 gift card. Russ has chosen to donate that card to the Children’s Burn Camp in Union, Connecticut where several of our Millburn firefighters volunteer their time as counselor’s for one week in July. “I know they can really use the money to work on the camp” Russ said.
The Knights of Columbus, Saint Rose Council, No. 6386 has 180 members and is one of 135 councils in the State of New Jersey. It is a charitable fraternal organization of catholic men. Out of the 1.8 million knights in the country, there are 65,000 here in New Jersey.

Newest Sir Knights

On April 25, 2010, the St. Rose Council sent six men to the NJ District 1 Fourth Degree exemplification at the Parsippany Hilton. Congratulation to our newest Sir Knights: Dominic Balzano, John Kennedy, Ed Langley, Joe Noel, Charlie Reisler and Dr. Dick Riva. The day started with Mass at 9:00 AM celebrated by Faithful Friar James Smith. Our newest Sir Knights became part of the St. Isaac Jogues Assembly, 0649, headquartered in Livingston and they hosted a hospitality room for candidates and sponsors. 194 new Sir Knights were accepted into the Order with eight of them coming from St. Isaac Jogues, six of whom are our men.
Just a little history and a personal note: our newest Sir Knights are the first Fourth Degree men sponsored by St. Rose Council since 2000 when our Chaplain, Msgr. Trabold became a member of the Bailey Assembly, now inactive. Last year, our Worthy Financial Secretary was instrumental in assisting all of St. Rose's Fourth Degree Knights in transferring their membership to the active St. Isaac Jogues.
Patriotism is the principle of the Fourth Degree and the Color Corp is the most visible aspect of the Order. All day long 194 candidates, 150 sponsors and fellow Sir Knights and 100 men of the Color Corp were all over the hotel having breakfast, preparing for the ceremonial, registering and the like. Every man in a black tuxedo, white shirt, black bow tie, black socks and shoes and each looking pretty spiffy. But I came to the conclusion that I really must begin to get out more often. As I left the house in the morning my wife admired my tuxedo'd self saying I looked quite handsome. (She does have low standards.) Sometime later, sitting in the hotel lobby waiting for our six men to arrive and begin the registration process, I noticed a spec of dust on my left thigh. Casually flicking it off I noticed another one on the right. I flicked that off but saw the first spec was still there having been immune to my original flick. Upon closer inspection I was chagrined to discover the specs were actually moth holes only visible when the fabric is stretched tight against the skin, but fortunately not visible when standing. Needless to say my feet were tired by the end of the day.
